This donated food, which would otherwise go to waste, is delivered free-of-charge to 155 emergency food providers in the Metro Detroit area.
Metro Times is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2010 and Vodka Vodka is their first big event of the year. Metro Times is Michigan’s largest weekly alternative newspaper for news, nightlife, arts, culture, music, film, food, fashion and more. Over 700,000 loyal readers pick up Metro Times every week to find out who to see, what to do, and where to go.

Stuff to Do: Tour the Ren Cen

The GM Renaissance Center in Detroit
The holiday season is here, friends and fam are coming to visit, but you’ve already spent a mint on gifts (and, let’s be honest, some assorted Black Friday and Cyber Monday purchases that you’ve made for yourself). And your eager visitors want to do something. It would be cool to take them to Coach Insignia for dinner, but it’s super-pricey (though a great value at the bar during happy hour, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm). Here’s an idea — take them to the Ren Cen for a tour.

This fall, when thinking about one of the best ways to hang out with children — either your own or the ones of your family and best friends — what is a better way than a place all of you can learn about science in a fun/ well-design environment? Designed by New York-based architect Steven Holl, the Cranbrook Institute of Science has received a lot of attention from architecture magazines around the world.

Local Michigan Movie Site
Posted by Eric Brown | Filed under Urbane, UrbaneApts, movies
For everyone who loves a good movie, this is a pretty cool site, and is a local Michigan Project, which is uber cool.
mergemovies.com is a project based in Michigan and born out of a love for the moviegoing experience. Whether it is watching the latest blockbuster with throngs of people on an IMAX screen or thoughtfully pondering a foreign film at a more eclectic cinema venue, watching a film is more than simply staring at a screen. The experience of watching a movie is influenced by many factors—the individual, the people around you, the food and most of all, the place.
From theaters in booming metropolises to small town cinemas, the Midwest has a film culture all its own—a unique mix of do-it-yourself screenings, festivals, art house theaters and local and national chains. The main focus of this site then is to examine these places not only to better understand the connection between film and place, but to look at the past, present and future Midwestern cinema.

Last weekend Brandon and I had a visitor who happened to be an architecture student from Boston, so we were looking for a cool place where we can show him the architecture and some history of Detroit. What came to my mind first was the Phillip A. Hart Civic Center Plaza, located at Jefferson and Woodward Avenue. The 11-acre riverfront park is definitely a cool place for an afternoon of hanging out and learning a little bit about the history of our beloved Detroit City.

Stuff To Do: Cooking Class at Simply Good Kitchen

Recently, my wife and I had our first official “date” as newlyweds. This was our first real date in a long time as we were quite busy preparing for our big day. It went swimmingly by the way, thanks for thinking the question in your mind. Our wedding, rather. I mean, our recent date was awesome too, but I know you really wondered how awesome our wedding was. I know you [reader]. *wink*

This was not your ordinary date though. We decided to get our “learn on” in the area of gourmet cooking; the place - Simply Good Kitchen in Birmingham, MI. Simply Good was started back in 2002 by Shanny Apodaca to fuse the two loves of her life - cooking and teaching. Her husband, Bill, also a culinary artiste joined her operation about a year later as the business was expanding in an organic fashion. On Tuesday through Fridays, Shanny and Bill give cooking classes that revolve around the 5 basic cooking techniques that they deem, if mastered, will ensure that every dish you make will be great. Those techniques being sauté, grill, roast, braise and poach.

Stuff to Do + Buy Local: Pewabic Pottery
Posted by Brandon | Filed under art, design

Have you ever noticed some really beautiful tile in-lays in older buildings in the area? Or unique tile patterns? Or some green iridescent vases that look vaguely familiar?) (Check out the tile floor in the lobby at Urbane on Washington for a likely example). If you have, there’s a good chance that it’s an example of Pewabic Pottery.
Pewabic Pottery is a living treasure and offers visitors an exciting glimpse of a little known part of American history. Founded in 1903 during the Arts & Crafts Movement, Pewabic is nationally renowned for its tile and pottery in unique glazes. Today it is a non profit ceramic art education center which welcomes 70,000 visitors annually. –Pewabic Pottery

Stuff to Do: Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit
Posted by Brandon | Filed under art, events

Photo Credit Derek Farr via flickr, Neon by Martin Creed, & Mural by Barry McGee.
Detroit’s newcomer to the museum scene, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (known more affectionately as MOCAD), has a new director and a couple of new exhibitions, “Black Is, Black Ain’t” and “I Repeat Myself When Under Stress.” MOCAD is unique (and definitely worth a visit) for a couple of reasons. First, it does not have a permanent collection. This gives its staff the opportunity to continually plan, explore, and experiment with a variety of shows. Another interesting feature is the building itself, a former auto dealership. It’s cavernous, it’s recycled, and it’s very functional.
Located on Woodward and Garfield between the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Institute of the Arts, Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies, the museum is an innovative addition to Detroit’s Cultural Center, and functions as a hub for the exploration of emerging ideas in the contemporary arts. The 22,000 square foot building, a former auto dealership, has been simply renovated to maintain it’s historic character. With its raw, flexible and cavernous spaces, the building is well suited to the exhibition of contemporary art. Our ambitious series of public programs includes lectures, musical performances, films, literary readings and educational activities for children. –MOCAD
