Royal Oak could get more walkable, bike-friendly - with your help

Do you find it difficult to walk or bike some areas of Royal Oak? Well now is the time to speak up. Residents have organized a Non-Motorized Plan Open House and want to hear from you. Mark your calendar for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28 at the Royal Oak Farmer’s Market, 316 E. 11 Mile in Royal Oak.

The event is open to all and offers a chance for residents to discuss possibilities like bicycle boulevards, road diets, bike lanes and more. Tom Regan helped bring the issue to our attention here at The Urbane Life. He’s been working with fellow Royal Oak residents Todd Scott and Melissa Demashke as part of a city commission-appointed task force to explore the possibility of creating a non-motorized plan.

“Cities that create non-motorized transportation plans are much more likely to qualify for government and private grants for infrastructure improvements to make biking and walking safer,” said Regan. “At the meeting we will gather ideas from Royal Oak residents on where they bike and walk and where they wish they could bike and walk.”

Specifically, they’d like to hear answers to the following four questions:

  1. Where do you bike and walk?
  2. Where do you wish you could bike and walk?
  3. Can your child safely walk or bike to school?
  4. How can we improve your transit experience in Royal Oak?

The task force was created in an effort to enhance safety for walkers and bicyclists in Royal Oak. “Riding on sidewalks is very dangerous; most of the cyclists who are hit by cars in Royal Oak are hit while riding from sidewalk-to-sidewalk,” said Regan. “Motorists must share the road. We need to make is so safe that more children walk and bike, especially to and from school.”

The matter earned the commission’s attention after the death of a cyclist on Woodward in 2008, Regan said, which was closely followed by the death of a pedestrian in downtown Royal Oak. As a resident who rides his bike around town and is a proponent of the environmental benefits both biking and walking can bring to the city, Regan believes a non-motorized transportation plan can help enforce the necessary safety and encourage more people to choose alternatives to driving.

Royal Oak’s Pamela Foster responded to the questions noting she’d like to be able to bike from 13 Mile and Woodward to Ferndale and possible from 13 and Woodward to downtown Detroit. There is no safe bike route to Wayne State University, she noted, adding that she’d like to see more bike lanes in the area.

Regan had a few ideas as to where improvements could start too, of course. Namely, Crooks and Main.

“Because of the way the railroad track and golf courses cut up streets in Royal Oak it is difficult to find north-south routes on side streets,” said Regan. “Those are also the two streets that could lead cyclists to the high school and middle school, if they were bike-friendly.

“We could put both streets on a ‘road diet’ – reduce them to 3 lanes (the middle lane is a turning lane) with bike lanes on both side. Cars would still move plenty fast, students could bike to and from school, and everyone could easily bike to and from downtown.”

What are your thoughts on biking and walking in Royal Oak? Do you find it challenging or unsafe? Which streets are most dangerous or could use a road diet, in your opinion?

‘The Kids Are All Right’ is the summer indie flick you’ve been waiting for

    screen-shot-2010-07-23-at-115053-am-300x209.png

One of the most unexpected and delightful movies to hit the screen this summer, The Kids are All Right, could pass you by. Don’t let it. The family dramedy stars an amazing ensemble cast led by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore who portray a lesbian couple and parents to Joni and Laser, played by Mia Wasikowska (most recently seen in Alice in Wonderland) and Josh Hutcherson. When they decide to seek out the sperm doner who made their lives possible – played by a scruffy and loveable Mark Ruffalo – the entire family turns a bit upside down.

Writer-director Lisa Cholodenko weaves a truly engaging tale and allows us to peer into this loving family in a way we haven’t really seen on screen before. Jules and Nic are a loving couple who gave birth to their own children, through the aid of a sperm donor. They’ve managed to create a loving home and kept their family well-intact through trying teenaged years. And now, as their eldest daughter Joni is in her last days before college, their son, Laser has secretly asked her to find out who this man was. When Paul – the man in question – agrees to meet his biological children, he feels a connection and becomes a small part of the family. Not without some serious confusion.

With a soundtrack that includes tracks by Vampire Weekend and MGMT, The Kids are All Right allows a glimpse into family life like we’ve really never quite seen before. Writer-Director Lisa Cholodenko (Laurel Canyon) masterfully crafts a tightly woven story with relatable characters.

We’ve all been there. From the student about to leave home for college to the ups and downs of a relationship or the ache of wanting to be in one, these characters mirror different parts of our lives and do so in a way that makes us feel every bit of emotion.

We’re pained when Nic discovers Jules might be cheating or when she tries so hard at dinner to win Paul over with her embarrassing rendition of a Joni Mitchell song. But there are plenty of light-hearted moments in the film, too. Trust me. Go see it. And tell us what you think. It’s playing at the Landmark Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak.

Shakespeare returns to Starr Jaycee Park in Royal Oak July 22

Water Works Theatre Company is celebrating its 10th anniversary season this summer, and presenting the Shakespearean classic The Two Gentleman of Verona. Nothing says summer quite like an engrossing Water Works production at Royal Oak’s lush, green Starr Jaycee Park. If it’s something you haven’t experienced yet, I highly recommend grabbing a ticket. From the sunset and open air to the heart-felt performances to the candle-lit path post-show, it promises to be a memorable night out.

The Two Gentlemen of Verona tells the tale of two best pals who chase the same women around Italy only to find that the woman they left behind has donned a man’s suit and sought out behind them to find the truth. An ensemble cast includes Water Works veterans Sara Cathryn Wolfe as Julia and Rusty Mewha as Proteus, as well as Berkley’s own Stephen Blackwell taking on the role of Thurio. The play is directed by Barton Bund, founding artistic director of Ann Arbor’s Blackbird Theatre.

In addition to The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Water Works will present a daylight family show – for the second year – Lane Riosley’s The Commedia Tales of King Arthur. Bring the whole family for the discounted price of $6. It’s showing at 7 p.m. Tuesday or Wednesday or 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday from July 27 through Aug. 8, 2010.

Two Gentleman of Verona runs 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 3 p.m. Sundays from July 22 through Aug. 8. Tickets are $18 at www.waterworkstheatre.com.

Let the summer movie release mayhem begin! We’re ready

July 4 weekend is just around the corner. If you don’t plan to spend it at a lake or poolside - chances are you’re gonna take in a blockbuster movie. The anticipation has been building around my neighborhood for weeks, so I thought it might be worthy of quick flick recap. Here are a few of the movie moments I’ve found memorable about metro Detroit lately - and some I’m looking forward to seeing:

Harold and Kumar took over Somerset Collection – On June 21, everyone’s favorite funny guys started filming their next comedy, a holiday film titled A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, at the posh Troy mall. Twitter revealed the whereabouts of stars John Cho and Kal Penn.

Team Edward and Team Jacob sparred over Bella at Pleasant Ridge’s Stevenson Park I have to say I’m a little biased. Anytime I can walk from my apartment to watch a vampire movie at dusk and drink Vitamin Water, I’m a happy girl. Saturday night provided me just that opportunity with a free screening of New Moon. What a cool event, and a great way to get ready for this week’s release of the third installment in the Twilight series, Eclipse.

Sunday night Birmingham’s Palladium rolled out its red carpet for a preview performance of The Kids Are All Right Directed by Lisa Cholodenko (Laurel Canyon), stars Mia Wasikowska, of Alice in Wonderland fame, and Josh Hutcherson, strolled into the theater in style for an evening premiere that benefitted the JARC, a non-profit organization supporting children with developmental disabilities. The film opens in metro Detroit theaters, Friday, July 23rd for the rest of us, but check out the trailer here: www.KidsAreAllRightMovie.com.

Twilight Fans and sleepless nights – I’ll be attending a screening of Eclipse on Tuesday evening with friends (and yes, I’m giddy about it like a 12-year-old!). But the film opens to the public on June 30. The Henry Ford has announced that its midnight shows (12:01 a.m.) are already sold out. There are still tickets available for the 2:30 a.m. showing for Twi-hards who plan to stay up late! We’re talking IMAX people – and The Henry Ford is armed and ready with a Cappuccino Bar. That’s serious espresso and one gigantic screen. The movie runs 2 hours and 10 minutes, so plan to head straight to breakfast afterward! Get your details here: http://www.hfmgv.org/events/twilightEclipse.aspx. Then check out the Team Edward YouTube for a giggle.

What movie are you most likely to see this holiday weekend?

Meet me at Midnight at the movies

Midnight movies at the Main Art Theatre are something of a tradition in Royal Oak. There also an unmistakable sign of summer.

The midnight series kicked off earlier than usual this year - but it’s not too late to catch a late-late show. Four more movies are listed, beginning with this weekend’s Detroit premiere of Gone With the Pope – a Grindhouse Releasing film by Duke Mitchell that follows four ex-cons on their journey to kidnap the pope.

This is the first time the 1970s crime drama will be presented on screen in the area.

Cult classic The Warriors finds its way to the screen next Friday and Saturday, June 25-26; followed by The Big Lebowski (raise your hand if you’re going in a bathrobe ala The Dude); and then it’s The City of Lost Children July 9-10 starring Ron Perlman.

There’s just something about grabbing a late dinner at a favorite spot like Bastone or Ronin, a beer at Gusoline Alley with friends and then heading over late-night to the theater to catch a kitschy old horror flick or B-movie. I’ve seen everything from A Nightmare Before Christmas to Dario Argento’s Suspiria at Midnight Movies at the Main Art.

No joke - rabid skunks have been found in Royal Oak

Tonight marks The Urbane Way’s much anticipated LaughUp event, co-hosted by Social Media Club Detroit’s David Murray. But we promise, the news we just heard is no joke.

Apparently Royal Oak City Officials have found yet another rabid skunk in our neighborhoods. For the fourth time, police officers have responded to a call where a skunk was found dying on the front lawn near Nelson Brothers Plumbing, at 1115 E. Eleven Mile Road.

ClickonDetroit.com reported that spotting wild animals during the day is a warning sign. If you notice one, you may want to notify animal control. If you are bitten by a stray or a domestic animal - wash the area with soap and water and seem immediate medical attention.

Pet owners, please make sure your animals are vaccinated. Residents, you may want to think twice before approaching a stray animal. I am a huge fan of cats and dogs and love a chance to pet a fluffy dog walking on the street.

Just be thoughtful when you’re out and about. Think Cujo. When an animal becomes infected it may act aggressive or lethargic (and in old Cujo’s case, it may even foam at the mouth). Have you noticed any suspicious wild animals in the area? We’d like to hear about it.

Royal Oak readies for Clay, Glass and Metal Show this weekend

Come summer in Michigan, art shows aren’t difficult to come by. In fact, there seems to be an one art-centric event every single weekend. On June 12-13, The Royal Oak Clay, Glass and Metal Show takes over the downtown streets in our neighborhood, showcasing more than 140 artists from across the country.

It’s one of the events I most look forward to each year. It’s only the second time that metal artists have been formally included into the show, though they’ve doubled in number.

For its 16th year, the juried art event – organized by the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce – will culiminate in the creation of a vine and floral mosaic made of scrap materials and displayed at the Royal Oak Public Library. The mosaic project brings artists and festival-goers into the fold.

Royal Oak ceramists Laurie Eisenhardt and Marsha Hovland crafted the frame. Clay artists contributed shards from broken works that visitors will be invited to add into the frame for the piece, titled Broken Dreams, Artfully Reassembled.

    Will you leave you mark?

10 Questions: Comedian Erik Allen headed to Royal Oak, Birmingham’s #LaughUp

    Erik Allen
    Erik Allen
Nationally-known comedian Erik Allen will take the stage June 10-12 at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak. But he’s been gracious enough to agree to perform his original, off-beat brand of comedy at a #LaughUp event, set for 6-10 p.m. Wednesday, June 9 at Urbane Space.
We’ve got all the event details here for those of you who want to catch a preview of his act - or are brave enough to take the stage for some improv or standup of your own. It’s gonna be a night of networking and noshing that’s free and funny. What more can you ask for?
Well, we had some questions. Ten of them. And Erik Allen was kind enough to answer them. Check this out:
UrbaneLife: Tell me when and how you decided to pursue a career in comedy? Describe the moment you knew this is what you wanted to do.
Erik Allen: I was 18 years old, and I went on stage for 3 minutes doing jokes to 150 people in almost silence, and then I got a tiny laugh on some line and got a high I never felt before in my life. And now I just run around the country trying to get my “fix” of laughter.
UrbaneLife: Tell me a little about your background, where you live and what the comedy scene is like there.
Erik Allen: I grew up in a small town called Becker, Minn. till I was 18. Lived in La Crosse, Wisc. for 4 years after high school, where I was a radio DJ on a rock morning show, and then moved to Minneapolis to pursue comedy realistically. I have been in Minneapolis for 4 years now, and the comedy scene is ripe with talent, creative, intelligent humor. I would pit Minneapolis’ underground open mic talent against any other city in the world.
UrbaneLife: When did you win the Acme Comedy Company’s Funniest Person Contest and what did the award mean to you?
Erik Allen: I won in 2007 a year after moving to Minneapolis and it was the greatest feeling ever in my life at that point. I just knew with that win, I now had a comedy club to call home, and that is what I really wanted.
UrbaneLife: For those who have not yet experienced a live performance by you, how would you describe your comedy style?
Erik Allen: I don’t even know if I have a style yet. I do more longer jokes then one-liners. I like to stay on the cleaner, creative side of things.
UrbaneLife: What inspires your act the most?
Erik Allen: Life experience, knowledge, also my brain is broken so I just look at thing differently.
UrbaneLife: How did the idea for the LaughUp come about? Have you ever done something like this before?
Erik Allen: All @DaveMurr - He came up with the idea as just a way to have some fun while I was in Detroit area. I have never been a part of a #LaughUp before but I am really excited to be part of this event.
UrbaneLife: What does it take to make you laugh?
Erik Allen: It’s not easy but as long as you are creative and original, and I don’t see it coming, you can get me to laugh.
UrbaneLife: Who are some of the performers you’ve toured with, or some of your favorite comedians out there today?
Erik Allen: I did some theaters with Nick Swardson those were the biggest shows I have done thus far in my career. Some of my favorite comics touring now are Brian Regan, Jim Gaffigan, Louis CK, Chad Daniels, Maria Bamford, Mike Birbiglia. Tons of others.
UrbaneLife: Have you performed at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle before? Anything you’re looking forward to about that event, that crowd or coming to the metro Detroit area?
Erik Allen: I was at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle last summer, and I am excited to return. I am opening for the Hilarious and Wonderful Karen Rontowski who I know and love. Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle is one of the top clubs in the country. We had such great crowds last summer I am glad to be able to come back. Mark Ridley’s has also showcased some legendary talent. I feel honored to be able to perform there.
UrbaneLife: Is there anything you’d like to add?
Erik Allen: Come to #LaughUp and come see a show at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle. I promise a good time.
This event is brought to you by The Urbane Way and Social Media Club Detroit Founder David Murray. Current and new Urbane Apartments residents will have a chance to enter a drawing and win 3 months free rent during #LaughUp. Just check in on Foursquare for a chance to enter.

Royal Oak man claims he’s a vampire, threatens police

Attention "vampires" perhaps you could just grab some of this blood orange drink instead of getting drunk and threatening a police officer? Just a thought.

    Try the Blood ORANGE option

Don’t blame Stephenie Meyer or the success of HBO’s True Blood series for a Royal Oak native who’s taken the vampire craze way too far. Sure, I’ve read the Twilight series, seen the movies and I know a few things about the fictional world of vampires. But the story that made headlines in today’s Oakland Press didn’t exactly amuse me the way The Lost Boys did.

Apparently a 21-year-old Royal Oak native named Andrew Whiteman was found outside of an Ohio Drug Mart at 3 a.m. Saturday on the hunt – for blood. He reportedly threatened a police deputy and announced that he would “live forever” because, you guessed it, he’s a vampire.

Whiteman has been charged with attempted breaking and entering of the store in Lorain County, Ohio, disorderly conduct and intimidation. Police said he was extremely intoxicated and slurring his speech at the scene. But the words he managed to eek out were pretty intense. According to the story, Whiteman threatened to kill a police deputy and his children and he told a female corrections officer he wanted to eat her kidney.

MLive.com reported that: “Whiteman told the deputy that he is a vampire who is more than 100 years old, and that he could smell the deputy’s blood from the rear seat of the patrol car. He added that he desired to suck the aforementioned blood.”

I don’t know about you but I’m not so sure I like the idea of this particular vampire roaming our streets. This all makes for an interesting news story but I’ll stick to True Blood (new episodes start June 13!). What do you make of all this?
