Zeitgeist: Guv says to Buy Michigan!

Tonight, in her State of the State Address, Governor Jennifer Granholm spoke about “Priorities for Michigan’s Economic Future: Jobs, Education and Protecting Families.” She also spoke about deep cuts that are going to have to be made to keep the state afloat in this tough economy. The soaring moment in her speech, though, was when the Guv answered the question — what can I do, what can we do, to help?
When I talk with people across Michigan they often ask, “What can I do to help?” Here’s my simple answer: Whenever you can, buy products made or grown in Michigan. There’s no reason we can’t all root for the home team. Support Michigan. Select Michigan. Buy Michigan. Everything from Ford to Faygo. From Bell’s Beer to Blueberries. While we may court new investment from outside our state, our first love is the businesses that have long called Michigan home. –Governor Granholm, February 3, 2009
Check out our list of Michigan-made products, after the jump, from A to Z . . . and recommend your own!

February 3rd, 2009 at 11:02 pmGranholm is preaching to the choir when it comes to me! I’ve featured a few places to shop around the Midwest at my site…including posts about Cherry Republic and Zingerman’s in December.
One of the reasons I like shopping places like Westborn is that they carry a lot of Michigan products in the store. Steenstras Almond St Claus cookies is one that pops into my mind right this instant. -

February 3rd, 2009 at 11:04 pmPronto! Corner Store in Royal Oak has a lot of Michigan products as well. Can you post links to those posts for us here in the comments, Dominique? I think they would be of interest to our readers.

February 3rd, 2009 at 11:28 pmBuying some cheese, wine, or beer is nice and good for the economy, but I think we need to feature/buy big ticket items like Cars and Trucks! GM sales are down 49% this month. Oh my.

February 4th, 2009 at 11:53 amGreat idea — to post this list. I even linked it to my Facebook page. I’m a longtime fan of Cherry Republic, but had no idea that Jiffy mix (which I am never without) is a Michigan product! I will start paying closer to my purchases.
But I’m guilty of not supporting the car industry (although my husband drives a GM car). I need to change that. As I recently told a friend who scolded me for owning my foreign car, I am a longtime print journalist, and I wish more people would support the newspaper business, too. My scolding friend admitted that he doesn’t subscribe to any newspapers in a long time ….

February 4th, 2009 at 3:06 pmJust wanted to point out that there are lots of great kids books like the Mick Morris Myth Solver Books, and Ghost Board Posse, that are completely produced in Michigan, even printed here. There are also many other chapter books and picture books for kids with local publishing companies and printing houses. Read Michigan made, too!

February 4th, 2009 at 10:39 pmThanks, everyone for the great comments!
Cindy — thanks for the comment and for linking this to your Facebook profile — we appreciate it! Tough to get people to buy newspapers when they’re hard to buy — what happened to the newsstand on the corner of 6th and Washington? Sorry the background is tough to read on some browsers . . . we’ve been experimenting . . .
Matty — thanks for the tip on McClure Pickels — if I could only find a Q company . . .
Karen — nice point on supporting local authors. Is there a list/ website that you can point out to our readers?
Thanks, Cynthia, Wayne State is a wonderful resource in our area (I have 2 interns from their law school working for me right now!)
Hubert — gracias! Looking forward to your next post.
Eric — thanks for reaching out to the Guv’s twitter account. Do you think she really twitters? Hmmmm….. Would be AWESOME if she left us a comment here. Come on Governor Granholm!
Frank P — thanks, as always, for your comments and for following our blog.
SAN — thanks to you too. It is getting harder… but the list above shows that there are some companies worthy of our support. I think I’ll switch to Bells from Sam Adams…
Phew. Keep the comments coming, folks! Especially those with some more suggestions as to brands/ companies we should consider supporting/ highlighting!
