A fresh take on the holiday wreath from the Art Department

A fresh take on the holiday wreath from the Art Department

Dwell, a cool monthly magazine on modern architecture and design, has long occupied a place on UrbaneBlog’s blogroll.  It’s a great source for ideas for building a house or for beautiful pieces to upgrade an apartment or loft.  Besides their magazine, which is popular with both influential architects and mere mortals interested in modern design, Dwell also runs several blogs on its website.  One of our favorites is the “Products” blog.  Here, Dwell writers post about an eclectic mix of objects for the modern home.

In recognition of the holiday season, we are highlighting a few of their finds that are related to the Santa Season.  (However, don’t forget to try to spend some dollars near home as well!  For those in or near Royal Oak, Vertu offers a great selection of classic modern pieces and are helpful at providing you advice regarding where to get something that they don’t have.)

1.  Green Wreath, (pictured above), by the Art Department, $325 (available for $300 without the red berries, shown above)

Hang this festive ceramic wreath on your door to welcome in the holiday season. Artists Felix Knaizev and Olga Julinska have a brilliant collection of holiday pieces available on their site, including ornaments and candlesticks, and their hand-crafted work is all made-to-order.

A couple of more finds, after the jump (including a free one!) . . .

2.  Leaf Motif Pillow, by Donna Wilson, ~$117

You’ve got a long day of big eating ahead of you, and resting up is a good idea (we highly recommend lounging both before and after turkey time). This lambswool pillow from Scottish textile designer extraordinaire Donna Wilson is a perfect fall addition to your sofa, a bight place to lay your head and dream of second helpings.

Okay, so this one is a bit of a do-it-yourselfer project.  But looks like fun!  Download it here.

The holiday season kicked off in style with Thanksgiving last week, and now the countdown begins for those eager to celebrate Christmas. Mibo, a UK-based design studio, is kindly offering a free download of a sweet advent calendar to delight the kiddies and young-at-heart alike. It only takes about ten minutes to assemble, and all you’ll need is an exacto, some glue, and a solid cutting surface. Follow the link, and enjoy!

**Please note: if the link is over-capacity when you click through, give it a minute and try again. If it still won’t allow you to download, email info (at) mibo (dot) co (dot) uk, and they’ll send you a PDF directly.

4.  Penguin Classics New Clothbound Series, The Penguin Group, ~$20/volume

Books are always a great holiday gift. They have the potential to inspire a reader, and these volumes look hot too.

Books are always a great holiday gift. They have the potential to inspire a reader, and these volumes look hot too.

These brilliant books caught my eye back in August on Design Sponge, though at that point I was not sure how easy they would be to get in the US. The set of classic novels are beautifully designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith and bound in vibrant colors. With a little searching it looks like they became available on Amazon in late October, though individually and not as a set. They would make an incredible gift for someone, I know I want a whole row on my bookshelf. Time to catch up on the classics. —Alexis Tjian

Thanks for the comment — my favorite are the books. They look Christmasy, but also are a treat to read.
