A True Community Photo Event

A Guest Post by Dave Peckens (Dave, we really thank you for such kind words, much appreciated)
This past Sunday I had the opportunity to co-host a photowalk in Royal Oak, Michigan. What’s a photowalk, you ask? Well a photowalk or photowalking is simply the act of walking with a camera for the main purpose of taking pictures of things you may find interesting. Wikipedia has a nice article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/photowalking. My co-host, Becks Davis (@becksdavis) has already published “How a Tweet becomes a Photo” on her Detroit Moxie blog. And here’s a link to see the photos uploaded from our fellow photowalkers in the Photowalks Detroit Flickr pool.
After the event I tweeted that (for me) the best part of the entire #photowalkro experience was the people. Forget that we had 15 people of differing photography levels. Forget that we had a wide range of cameras including point-and-shoots, DSLRs, and even a few video cams. In the end it came down to setting aside our busy lives and sharing a few hours with different people who hold a similar affinity. To me that looks a whole lot like…
Community. And it is a cornerstone of which Urbane Apts is built upon. If you look to the heart of each of their developments, managed properties, and office spaces you’ll see that they are drapped in the concept of community. Don’t believe me? Check out the Urbane Lobby website, the virtual gathering spot for residents of urbane apartments.
Eric Brown, Urbane’s front man, has taken the daring first steps to transform the rental property market in South Eastern Michigan. How? He blogs, he engages on Twitter, he even shares his ideas and marketing concepts with local competitors. Why? Because he believes in synergy. That the parts are greater than the whole. And that by raising each other up we create a better life for all involved.
Surely you can try old adage concepts like “1st month free” and “pet friendly”, or you can employ the Urbane concepts of “free wifi” and “VIP passes for local eateries” to build a thriving community of long-term renters. The choice is yours.
