Stories I Twitter’d about instead of working: November 16

I feel like a social-media dork for writing this, but it’s been a crazy day on the interwebs!
Rather than take one big idea and flesh it out, there were so many crazy-cool local things going on, I want to write about them all…and shout out to some of our Twittering friends!
You can always be part of our conversation by following Eric, Heather, Kim, Ashley, or the Urbane Life blog on Twitter. I mean, unless you have actual work to do or something (but why would you want to do that stuff?)
RT @merchantsrow: Looking forward to the ice skating rink opening at Campus Martius Park—countdown to Nov. 20th starts now! Guys, my friend emarsh just Twitter’d me to say that people are already skating on the rink (it is really cold enough already?) It’s winter. It’s snow time. It’s go time. Don’t stop till you get enough!
I met David Merrit when he was a super shy, quiet college freshman at the University of MIchigan. I supervised him while he was an intern at Ford Field in Detroit. He was much better behaved than the other interns, who I usually caught watching Dave Chappelle videos on the office computers. But did I ever think that he’d end up designing clothing…or serving the captain of U of M’s basketball team? One of my favorite Twitter-ers, and former classmate Angela’s Eye has the story about David’s new clothing line, IMU, here. There’s a great sale on t-shirts, as well as an adorable video to watch. See the video here.
Speaking of Angela, if you’re an early bird when it comes to Christmas gifts, you’ll love this story she just penned about my favorite Detroit sibling designers, CityBird!. CityBird’s adorable Detroit designs have made Canfield’s Bureau of Urban Living store my #1 gift shop-stop for all of 2009. Now City Bird will have their own Midtown store chock full of Detroit plates, shot glasses, notebooks, bags, and tons of other cool stuff. The store will be located in the awesome 460 W. Canfield building between Cass and Second. Check out the City Bird blog here!
The Pontiac Silverdome sold today…for $583,000. Yes, with a $200,000 salary and 20 down, YOU could own a former Super Bowl site. And…host a men’s and women’s professional soccer team there, according to the news. Yeah, because that’s been so successful here in Detroit.
More bad news…BBDO is officially shutting its Detroit doors in January, after losing the Chrysler account. Since Chrysler has gone through so much turmoil since it was sold to Daimler in 1998, and sold again to Cerberus in 2007, it’s hard to know how much of that is BBDO’s fault. What really makes this article newsworthy? AdAge does a great job of breaking down where creatives, techies, and account reps are finding jobs in Michigan these days. Required reading for anybody in the ad/marketing/web field.
Our Urbane Co-Work space is just gearing up at our new Adams location. Think of it as a fun communal office for everyone who is too young or too fun to want to hang out at work. Urbane residents and friends ShaunaN and balanon were working on our couches (while the desks arrive)…until they started an afternoon dance party. Heather_Urbane and I were super jealous because WE didn’t have a dance party, but we did put the Cupid Shuffle on at the office.
Twitter-whats?

November 17th, 2009 at 3:19 pmWhat a fun post! I’m heading to the Campus Martius “official” rink opening on Friday to skate for the first time in years and to see the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony.
That’s sad about BBDO, as well. On top of the thousands of creatives who will be without a job come January, there are quite a few smaller agencies in Detroit and Ann Arbor that worked with BBDO and will also be negatively effected.
