Non-motorized transportation plan in Royal Oak

This is an update about the effort to create a non-motorized transportation plan in Royal Oak.

As noted previously, the city commission has approved the budget item and selected a consultant. The planning will likely being in January. I’ll send an update the instant anything is scheduled.

A group of us will attend the next city commission meeting on Monday, November 9th, 7:30 pm at Royal Oak City Hall, 211 S. Williams, Room 315, Royal Oak MI 48067.

We will urge the city commission to consider a “road diet” for Crooks Blvd. For the past several months Crooks, normally four lanes, was reduced to two lanes while it was re-paved. A lot of people noticed that despite being reduced to two lanes there were no major traffic backups, even during rush hour. This is hard evidence that a “road diet” would work on Crooks. A “road diet” means reducing Crooks to three lanes (one lane going each way, with a middle turning lane) and bike paths on each side, similar to what Ferndale accomplished with Hilton.

In addition, it is very likely that Royal Oak Schools will reduce or eliminate school bussing to cope with a $3 million budget cut. Crooks leads to both Royal Oak High School and Royal Oak Middle School, and making it safe for bicyclists would be a boon for students.

We will point this out to the city commission Monday, please join us if you are able.
