Sonic Drive-In Hits a Snag

As reported below, Sonic Drive-In was slated to locate in the old Wendy’s location on Washington and Eleven Mile, but we have heard they have hit a snag with environmental issues at the site. We wish them luck in resolving things and moving forward.

Drive-in, roller-skating restaurant may be coming to Royal Oak.
Excerpt:
Sonic Drive-In, a fast-food restaurant that employs roller skating servers, may be replacing the vacated Wendy’s at the southwest corner of 11 Mile and Washington.
The 62-year-old fast-food chain, based in Oklahoma City, Okla., recreates the drive-in diner feel of the 1950s. Servers greet customers at their vehicle, sometimes on roller skates.
“To us, (Detroit) is still the car capital of the world and this brings the nostalgia back, celebrates the automobile,” said Bob Middleton, one of three principal owners of the proposed franchise. “Obviously, three or four months of the year (servers) won’t be allowed to roller skate, but when the weather allows, (servers) will be roller skating.”

November 5th, 2009 at 12:11 pmI wish them luck in moving elsewhere. CBDs are not the proper location for drive-ins chain restaurants. Those should be located on other business strips such as Woordward. The city needs to bring in pedestrian-friendly urban development to the CBD.

January 28th, 2010 at 4:14 pmMost Sonic Drive-Ins have a walk-up window, which (as a pedestrian) I greatly appreciate. I think this will be a great addition to Royal Oak, and I hope the fix the problems soon. Though I am not too big a fan of faceless fast-food chains, I’d rather have anything there than see the same abandoned spot every day. I wonder how much it will block up traffic though. That’s a pretty busy intersection!
