Let’s Ban Smoking at Urbane!

Hello Fellow Residents,I would like to propose a total smoking ban in the apartments. Afterall, smoking hasn’t been “urbane” in decades. In fact, its nauseating, foul, and vomitous. Not to mention unhealthy.
Let’s put the smack down on this, folks. Pitchforks. Water balloons. Rendition.
Your neighbor in peace,
Colton
P.S. This smoker is cracking me up though. She’s got attitude. She’s the last resistance smoker:
LOL. Stinky punks

October 5th, 2009 at 6:11 amI think before we take on an issue as serious as banning an addiction, we might think about gently nudging our fellow neighbors to take the baby steps of using the recycling bins, or cleaning up their dog’s excrement. As of right now, they can’t handle the mundane, much less the extraordinary life change required to quit smoking. Oh, and the next “dog pile” I step in will be scraped from my shoe, and delivered back to the dog’s owner in a convenient recyclable paper bag.

October 5th, 2009 at 8:59 amWhile it hasn’t been a real big issue for me so far living at Urbane, I still would be all for something like this. I’ve only smelled smoke once or twice while walking through the halls or stairwells, and never had any huge problems with this while inside my apartment, which would be the real issue. I have, however, had to pick up people’s discarded cigarette butts (and even half a disgusting cigar) off my balcony a few times, which was just plain nasty. As unpopular as a move as this is (and honestly I don’t understand why) I think Urbane needs to step up and follow the lead of places like the Comedy Castle and have the guts to make a policy knowing that you are going to piss off a few people, but in the end create a better and more enjoyable product for everyone else. And if you don’t like it? Still want to smoke and not go outside? Go rent somewhere else. Enjoy the nasty smelling carpeting of an Amber Apartment.
I also agree with Couch’s comment regarding the recycling situation, but that may be another discussion. We used to have a bin out back at the Washington building….which would just pile up to the point of spillover, get picked up maybe once every three months…and now it’s gone and hasn’t been there in quite some time. I think I’d rather see that return first before all of this.

October 9th, 2009 at 3:24 pmI’m a sometimes smoker, but that’s not the sole reason I’m against banning ALL smoking at Urbane.
I agree that any complex housing smokers should have smoke-free zones, ashtrays, and fines for throwing cigarette butts. That’s just common courtesy. But I think people have the right to make their own choices in their own apartments.
An analogy: I really am not an animal person. I’m also totally allergic. So hearing your dog bark incessantly, smelling your cat’s litter box down the hall, or sneezing for six straight weeks in the winter probably bugs me as much as smoking bugs you. But I know that my preferences aren’t necessarily everyone’s. As long as residents take care of their pets, I can keep my animal-loathing thoughts to myself… -

October 9th, 2009 at 5:50 pmHey Everyone,
i appreciate the conversation here. I am not a smoker, nor do I have a affection for folks smoking in the buildings we own and operate at Urbane. However, too ban folks from smoking in their space they call home seems dictatorial
This point is of particular interest, and significant as it is written and commented on by Urbane Residents. I typically have pretty strong and passionate opinions about things, but I am torn by this one.
Thank you each for commenting,

October 15th, 2009 at 1:08 pmLiving in an apartment building requires compromises. If you want to live in a place that’s exactly how you want it, rent or buy a house. I smoke. A lot. But never in the common areas, only in my apartment. I keep a window open to prevent it getting stagnant and I don’t throw butts on the ground outside. In short, I try to be as considerate of others as I can. Maybe once in a while you can smell it in the hallway outside my door, I dunno. But I think a little stinky smell once in a while is hardly worse than dealing with whoever lives above me that clomps up and down the stairs like Frankenstein so hard that it rattles the dishes in my cabinets. Or hearing your dog bark its head off every time you come home. Or almost stepping in a giant pile of your dog’s crap. You just deal with it. I’ve enjoyed living at Urbane for the past two years. Even though its overpriced, I think the free internet, no pet fees, and prompt and friendly maintenance service is worth it. But ban smoking and I’m out the next day.

November 28th, 2009 at 12:13 pmI am personally against the ban, as well. I could understand if it was to be adjusted, but it should a something adjusted on the next term’s lease, which would allow the residents to make other living arrangements.
Personally, I know we would not be living at Urbane if it was a smoke free residence. I personally only smoke about three times a week, and usually after a long night of work on my way home, but I have friends and family that come who like to smoke, as well as my partner. Granted, smoking w/out ventilation isn’t too smart, but that’s what windows are for!
Seems there are other things that would need much more attention before smoking were to be on the top of the list. =)

June 6th, 2010 at 2:52 pmI dont mind smoking in ones own apartment myself. What is really bugging me is the people who smoke right near my open window, which happens to be my daughters nursery. Its a sweat box if the window is closed or its a smoke house if its open.
