Let Exposure.Detroit show you around the city

Detroit seems to have taken more than its fair share of media knocks recently, but check out the newest Exposure.Detroit exhibition at the Bean & Leaf Café (on Main Street, just south of 11 Mile in Royal Oak) for a closer look at some of the best, beautiful and most interesting sites around the city.

The photo exhibit consists of approximately 40 great images selected from over 100 entries showcasing the city of Detroit submitted by Exposure.Detroit members.

I love the idea of a themed show putting a positive spotlight on Detroit and asked Exposure.Detroit member Christian Spencer about the exhibit as he took a break from hanging photos the night before the exhibit’s August 7 debut.

“We wanted to get people out and about and get them interested in going downtown,” said Christian.

More after the break…

Exposure.Detroit is a Flickr-based group of local photographers from metro Detroit dedicated to promoting camaraderie, networking and enhancing the photography knowledge of members through exhibitions of their work, social events, group photo shoots, technical sessions and other events.

I became aware of the group because my local writing group meets regularly at the Bean & Leaf and I picked up an Exposure.Detroit flyer there after becoming curious about the coffeehouse’s regular photo displays. I took the flyer home to Tim, the real photographer in our household, and he joined the group (be sure to look for his photo of the Underground Railroad Memorial on Hart Plaza in this show).

The folks at the Bean & Leaf are quite supportive of the various creative communities around town, and their ongoing hosting of Exposure.Detroit shows is just another example of that.

Exposure.Detroit puts together four shows each year at Royal Oak’s Bean & Leaf—each about three months long.

Interested in joining the group? Christian invites local photographers to check out the Exposure.Detroit Web and Flickr sites, plus come to Exposure.Detroit activities like organized group shoots or charitable events.

Any interested photographer can join the group, although it’s best for members wishing to become active in the group to be from the metro Detroit area and have their own Flickr account. The Flickr group at Exposure.Detroit has over 1,300 members, and the Web site has an active forum where you can get advice and chat with other group members.

“We have all levels of photographers—from snapshot type amateurs to professional photographers that do this for a living,” said Christian.

So, next time you’re in the mood to meet friends downtown or need somewhere with free WiFi for a little session of co-working, go on down to the Bean & Leaf, grab an ice tea or coffee and make sure you spend a bit of time checking out the work of some talented local photographers.

The current show will last into the fall (probably through October), when Exposure.Detroit pulls together yet another Bean & Leaf display of local talent from their members.

Jamie-Tim joined the group sometime last year I think. It’s a great opportunity for him to have a chance to show his photography–and I think it’s a nice confidence-builder for him right now.
He’s yet to go out on a shoot with them, and I threatened to go out with him when he does. Tim is more of a photographer than I am, but we enjoy getting out with the cameras together once in a while.
The group seems pretty friendly and supportive, so I’m sure you’ll enjoy being part of the group.

Paul-Thanks for stopping by. I’ve always enjoyed the shows at the Bean & Leaf and grabbed the chance to give Exposure.Detroit a little extra…um…exposure when I had the chance to do so!
