2011 Arts Beats & Eats: Beats Preview with the Gelheads, the Insyderz

In anticipation of the 2011 Arts, Beats, and Eats Festival coming to Royal Oak Labor Day weekend, the Urbane Life will be talking to some of the festival’s biggest and best bands and performers. Keep checking back to keep up on this year’s acts.

The Gelheads

The Royal Oak Music Theatre, Saturday Sept. 3, 5:30 to 6:30pm

The Arts, Beats & Eats are welcoming the Gelheads from Chicago with a spot on the Royal Oak Music Theatre’s stage. The band (with Detroit ties) is a power-pop/arena rock hybrid who has played with everyone from KISS to Fallout Boy. Vocalist Frank D’Angelo answers our Urbane Life A.B.E. Q&A’s:

Q: The Arts: What artist or piece of artwork best represents your band?

A: Maybe the “fist” in Hart Plaza… we want to knock you out!

Q: The Beats: Name your Top 5 Michigan musicians/bands of all time.

A: MC5, Iggy Pop, The Rockets, Ted Nugent, Bob Seger

Q: The Eats: What’s the best restaurant in Metro Detroit?

A: Slows BBQ, hands down.

Q: Favorite music festival moment of all time.

A: The Guinness Oyster Fest in Chicago in 2001. It was our first time on a national bill, we played before Alien Ant Farm and Dave Navarro. We got kicked out of the band trailer for drinking all the other band’s beer. We thought it was all for us!

The Insyderz

Budweiser Stage, Monday Sept. 5, 12:30 to 1:30pm

For festival goers looking to skank and/or dance, you may want to check out The Insyderz. This Detroit punk/skacore band are well known among the ska set. After a six year hiatus, the band has reunited. The humble Joe Yerke answers our Urbane Life A.B.E. Q&A’s below:

Q: The Arts: What artist or piece of artwork best represents your band?

A: I would love to say Banksy but at he end of the day there is no comparison between the him and us. We are kinda like a 2nd graders painting, you either love us, or you hate us.

Q: The Beats: Name your Top 5 Michigan musicians/bands of all time.

A: 1. The Suicide Machines 2. The Parka Kings 3. Kid Rock 4. Johnny Respect 5. Eminem

Q: The Eats: What’s the best restaurant in Metro Detroit?

A: Lazybone’s Smokehouse in Roseville. Best bbq around. The burnt ends are ridiculous.

Q: There’s over 200 bands playing the festival. What is it about your band that people will remember you for?

A: The incredibly ugly lead singer.
