New Royal Oak cupcakeries satisfy any sweet tooth

It may have taken a while for the cupcakery trend to hit the metro Detroit area. But once it found its foothold – thanks to Birmingham’s Cupcake Station – it seems we couldn’t get enough of the sweet buttercream-topped little treats. With flavors like What’s Up Doc carrot cake and their original – a simple combination of white cake topped with milk chocolate buttercream, and the choice of a mini and regular sized cupcake confection,  I was bound to get hooked.
And I’m in good company here. According to a recent Detroit News article, the shop that started it all is now franchising across the midwest.

I was pleased to see two new cupcake have contenders joined the fray here in Oakland County.

Just Baked, which originated in Livonia, opened its fourth location off of Woodward in Royal Oak at 14 Mile. There are no miniature sizes here, just a great balance between cake and icing. I stopped in for a taste-test and fell immediately for the Lemon cupcake, topped with just the right amount of lemon marshmallow buttercream. Chocolate-lovers are sure to feel like a kid again after biting into a Chocolate Malt. It combines a rich chocolate malt cake with a decadent maraschino cherry buttercream frosting.

Very soon, we’ll also welcome Cup.Cake, taking over the space at 3202 Crooks in Royal Oak. Judging simply by photos on their already-hopping Facebook fan page, early test recipes reveal a menu that includes Banana Whoopie Pies and Vegan-friendly choices. I can’t wait to see what brother-and-sister owners Eva Watt and Leon Ochoa have in store.
