November is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness month, an issue that is prevalent and remains a problem despite the rise in economy. Over 30% of Michigan’s homeless are in the Metro Detroit area. It is a problem that just shouldn’t be.
South Oakland Shelter (SOS) is a non-profit organization that coordinates temporary lodgings at more than 60 Oakland County congregations. It also provides case management services, health and career counseling, education and skill-based classes to enable homeless individuals and families to live independently. Recently, HUD awarded SOS nearly $340,000 to provide permanent housing to those in need, with a specific focus on veterans. Sadly, the funds are only enough to cover rental assistance and case management services for 32 families with nothing left over for basic household necessities.
In order to meet the needs of the families they are helping, South Oakland Shelter is in dire need of supplies like microwaves, toasters, coffeemakers, towels and any other household item that we take for granted.
On Thursday, Novemeber 27th, Urbane Apartments will sponsor a “House warming” event to help SOS secure basic household goods for formerly homeless individuals, families and veterans. The event will take place at the Urbane Apartments on 310 W. 6th Street in Royal Oak from 6-9pm. Live music and light refreshments will be included.
Please, bring what you can and join us in making this Holiday Season home and heart-warming!
