In the past several years, I’ve been wondering what the point of going to a movie theater is. For the price of getting in, I suppose I want more of an experience than just taking a seat in a seat. Heck, I can wait a few months, watch the same movie from Netflix, and have glass of wine with my popcorn … on my couch … with my favorite blanket.
But sometimes I want to hang out with friends and have a couple of drinks, and some movies are perfect for doing that … but not at a typical movie theater. Thank goodness we have the Magic Bag in Ferndale.
Wednesdays and every other Thursday are Brew ‘n’ View nights at the Magic Bag.
On Wednesday, Sept. 19, the Magic Bag will be showing “Moonrise Kingdom.” (A repeat showing is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 27.) It’s a story about a 12-year-old boy and girl who run away for a fantasy getaway on a New England Island. While the adults are looking for them, a violent storm brews. I can only imagine what kind of hilarity ensues when those grownups are Bruce Willis, Bill Murray and Frances McDormand who are directed by Wes Anderson of “The Royal Tennenbaums” fame. “Moonrise Kingdom” received some pretty high praise from film critics when it was released in late June, but hasn’t gotten the publicity it probably deserves.
That smart-mouthed teddy bear and his dysfunctionally immature companion of 27 years, John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), make their appearances at the screen in “Ted” at the Magic Bag Wednesday, Sept. 26 and Oct. 3. It’s the kind of movie that gets bigger laugh among friends that what comes from the screen.
For $2, it’s worth it to wait from watching these movies after their first runs, especially when you can see them in a much more fun environment, which was an XXX movie house in a past life.
Doors for Brew ‘n’ Views open at 8 p.m. Movies begin at 9:30 p.m.
The Magic Bag is located at 22920 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale.
