Whether they’re line workers or Big 3 execs, Detroiters have a die-hard, heavy metal sense of style. You don’t have to see it in their eyes, you can see it in their shades, and that Motor City cool look can be had whether you want to drop a few dollars or a few hundred dollars on sunny specs.

Berkley Eyewear: It’s a store so sun-shiny and bright that you have to get your shades here. Berkley Eyewear has been burning through the wayfarers, aviators and big, bug-eyed ladies glam sunglasses from lines such as the Converse Backstage Collection, The Beatles Yellow Submarine Eyewear Collection, Ed Hardy and True Religion. Just look for the bright orange building.

Incognito: Known to Detroiter’s as one of the coolest places to find men’s and women’s shoes and new and vintage clothing, Incognito is also the retail outlet for the company’s sunglass wholesale division that specializes in designer knockoffs. Not only locals, but rock stars including Kid Rock, Jon Bon Jovi and even ZZ Top have made it their place to pick up their cheap sunglasses. The average price for a pair of shads is about $15.

See: For those who want to make a statement, See’s collection includes the latest and artiest frames from designers around the world. Does exclusive, limited production frames mean expensive? No. Slick aviators in black-gray, ivory pearl-gray, khaki green, and dark tortoise brown can be had for $99 a pair.

Optik: In addition to its selection of contemporary frames not found anywhere else in the Detroit area, Optik carries the largest collection of unused vintage, or dead stock, eyewear in the Detroit area. The latest and hottest find: translucent multi-colored ‘70’s design big frame glasses, but most likely not at ‘70’s prices.

Showtime Detroit: Outfitters of Detroit’s rock bands since 1989, Showtime Detroit’s sunglass inventory is a great place to pick up ladies’ 1950’s rhinestone-studded cat eye sunglasses or men’s cop style aviators whether you want to spend $6 or $450.
