5 Cool Ideas for Moving
From www.MichaelAngeloCaruso.com
During my most recent move, I rediscovered that moving can be a serious bookmark
in one’s life. Whether relocating your business, your residence or in my case, both, the
event can mark the end of one life chapter and the beginning of another. Here are 5 Cool
Ideas for making the most of your move.
1. Always be planning to move.
As my friend Gail Cohen says in her audio program, Thinking Outside the Lines, some
people travel through life with carry-on bags and some people pack steamer trunks.
Try to travel through life without too much baggage. Practice the “two-year” rule and
moving will always be easier. The two-year rule is simple. Throw away, give away
or sell anything you haven’t used in the last 24 months. Give it to the Salvation Army
or Purple Heart and use the receipt for a tax deduction. Do this whether or not you are
moving. Consult your accountant regarding legal guidelines.
2. Always have a plan to move.
Boxes should be packed carefully, not randomly or in a hurry. Label the boxes with
the words “kitchen” or “basement” so they will be delivered to the correct room at the
new location. This strategy minimizes handling and breakage. It also keeps movers
from repeatedly asking, “Where does this go?” Get firm commitments from movers and
specify dates and times in writing.
3. Always have a back-up plan.
Have extra flashlights and batteries in case power gets turned off too soon at the old place
or turned on too late at the new place. Have a working cell phone in case there is a lag
in traditional phone service. Have a cooking grill, propane and a well-stocked cooler
available for the longest of moving days.
4. Take care of yourself during the move.
Moving can be physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting. Try not to interrupt
your regular sleep pattern. Eat well during the month of your move and drink lots of
water. On moving day, have fresh veggies cut up and handy for munching. Lift with
your legs, not your back. No showing off, please.
5. Make friends in a hurry.
I recently moved my business, which is also my home. The new address is below.
During our first few weeks in the new house, I made a special effort to wave at everyone
who drove past the house. I introduced myself to everyone who walked by. I met two
dozen new neighbors during the first 48 hours at my new house.
