Local author creates imaginative children’s books

It seems like a lot of people are having babies right now. OK, people have babies all the time, but over the past year, several friends have done so, which meant I needed to find a baby gift.

Looking around, I stumbled onto the Basie and Paisley books written by a local author, who sort of does this as a hobby. Jim Miller decided to write a children’s book upon the birth of his first child. His sister Leslie Kelly does the illustrations. One thing led to another and now there’s three books in the series. In their day jobs, Kelly is a graphic designer, and Miller is a PR professional at Franco Public Relations. In their spare time, they write books and can often be found reading them to kids at local schools.

Spider in my Belly Button

Basie and Paisley are a couple of fun monsters—definitely not the scary kind. They are beautifully illustrated in fun colors and with lots of imagination. So far, Jim has written A Spider Lives in my BellyButton, A Monstrous Smile, and most recently, A Moose in the Basement.

A Monstrous Smile

These are really cool books for toddlers, with small words that kids can understand. The stories are easy, and silly, but there’s a point to them. Miller hopes that with his books, he can inspire children that no idea is too silly, and that dreams can come true with hard work, dedication, and daydreaming!

You can find Basie and Paisley on Facebook and Twitter and buy them at Amazon, along with a few local retailers.
