Fathers and Movies

One well-trod theme in movies is the father-daughter/son dynamic. Here’s the thing: it never gets old. There are 1,261 memorable father moments in film and we’re going to do our best to dissect every single one. Kidding! Here are a few of our favorites.

Life is Beautiful

To Kill a Mockingbird fans will no doubt dispute this but Guido Orefice is our pick for best movie dad ever. He spends the entire movie sheltering his young son from the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp all while living inside the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp. It’s funny and it’s sad and I’m still waiting for Guido to come out from the alley.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Indy’s dad is a tough old codger and rides his son pretty hard sometimes, though always with the best intentions. For all the movie’s hilarious gibes (“You call this archaeology?”), the best moment comes at the end, where old man Jones acknowledges his son by calling him by his chosen nickname. Indy’s slipping from his father’s grasp as he dangerously reaches for the holy grail and, after decades of ribbing, Professor Jones finally calls his son Indiana.

Clark Griswold (All)

Clark Griswold is the patriarch of the family that takes all those National Lampoon’s vacations. He subjects his family to trips to Walley World, European round-a-bouts, greased up sleds, and Vegas. He’s a man of the greatest intentions with lesser intended results. And there’s always this nugget:

Where do you think you’re going? Nobody’s leaving. Nobody’s walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no. We’re all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We’re gonna press on, and we’re gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he’s gonna find the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nuthouse.

MJ Galbraith

MJ Galbraith

MJ Galbraith is a songwriter and local musician, freelance writer, baseball enthusiast, lover of travel, and a terrible mechanic. When MJ graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in Creative Writing, he was immediately barraged with 'questions' of "What are you gonna do, teach?" He is determined to not get a job teaching. So far, so good. With music, MJ's traveled the country touring on his songs. Having spent time in places from Chicago to Seattle, LA to New Orleans, and Nashville to NYC, he is convinced that Detroit and its 'burbs have the the highest concentration of 'native' songwriting talent anywhere. Eat it, New York. You too, LA. MJ started writing for the Urbane Life in the summer of 2011. He also writes for a handful of other websites as well as an immigration lawyer. He used to work in a publishing house. He's glad he's out.
