Take a bike tour of Detroit Saturday

Ready to start the Tour in '09.

I’m going to be very sad on Saturday. Why? Because I have to miss the annual Tour de Troit, the two-wheeled tour of the city, due to a healing leg injury.

I’ve been doing the Tour de Troit since 2005, the first fall I lived in the city. My husband and I were still feeling our way around the city, and since we both liked to ride our bikes, figured it would be fun. We had a blast, made some new friends, and saw parts of the city that we didn’t know existed. And we got a nice workout, on top of everything else.

That first year we attended, it wasn’t quite the production it is now, so we pretty much had a picnic lunch at Roosevelt Park (by the train station) afterward. Since then, it’s grown every year, and now it’s a bumpin’ party — and still an excellent time. Each year we’ve done it, we’ve gone on a different route, so if you’ve done it before, don’t be shy. Sign up to participate again!

Riding through the city, seeing the sights, making new friends and getting some fresh air is great — but there’s also music, food and drinks at the end. It’s a great way to try out new-to-you restaurants, too — and trust me, you WILL be hungry after riding your bike all around the city. Some of the offerings: Chili from Slow’s Bar BQ, cheese pizza, sub sandwich, burrito, pork tamale, or a vegetarian treat.

You don’t have to be Lance Armstrong to participate; the group takes a slow, easy pace, and has a police escort and support vans if you have a flat or if you fall behind.

Are any of you participating? Any first-timers out there? Come back and let us know what you thought after the ride in the comments!
