This is going to be my first real Winter. I’ve never lived through a seasonal change before coming to Detroit from California. I helped kick off this monumental event by attending the Detroit Lighting Ceremony this weekend. We arrived right as the countdown began and the park was packed with people. It was rad to be wearing gloves because my fingers were frozen (my friends tell me that it isn’t even cold yet) and we watched a huge tree be lit up. After walking around for a little bit we headed over to opening of GifteD. It was cool to see a bunch of succesful Detroit entrepenuers come together to form a Holiday Boutique downtown in what would normally be a vacant property. On the way there I saw a dude chaining up a BMX bike and we chatted for a bit about the lack of places to ride in the city, and what a skatepark would look like here.
A coup
le weekends ago I had the opportunity to be part of the Detroit Civic Intervention. I was able to share with the CreateHere group and other Detroiters about the positives of having a skatepark in Roosevelt Park. I helped contribute the skatepark aspect for a funding project that they were working on.
I enjoyed working with a bunch of amazing people who were so knowledgeable in what they do. Each person working on the project brought excellent information to the table and through countless hours of collaborations, implementations took place.
A website was created, letters in the park were installed, and a funding packet was produced. The Roosevelt Park Project isn’t an overnight process, but major tasks have already begun. I am so excited for what has already happened and what will continue to come.
All the images you see are video frame grabs from Stephen McGee who filmed the entire weekend. I will let you know when the video is posted because it is very inspiring to see what is going on in Corktown. Did I mention that he is an amazing Emmy Award winning film maker as well?
