There’s a reason my father insisted we all eat dinner together every evening growing up. Food is a communal and sensory experience. It brings us together in ways nothing else can. Fighting teenage sisters can pass plate of spaghetti topped with dad’s meat sauce and everything would be OK again.
That carries over in all stages of life. Don’t you think? Dining is at the heart of a memorable date, a great night out with friends, a family celebration. And if you live in Detroit or the vicinity, you’re lucky enough to choose from restaurants that span the globe in culinary traditions.
We’re in the midst of 10 glorious days of fall’s Detroit Restaurant Week – perhaps the greatest excuse to get out and try some of the best restaurants the city has to offer. If you think places like Coach Insignia, Cuisine or Roast are a bit out of your normal budget for a night out, this is the time to go.
A total of 18 premiere dining establishments have crafted mesmerizing three course menus for one price – $28. You’ll get a taste of what Atlas Global Bistro, Opus One or Roma Cafe is really about, from appetizer to dessert, and you won’t leave with empty pockets.
It’s not too late to call for a reservation and experience this dining renaissance for yourself. Make a night of it. I participated in DRW last spring and finally made it to Saltwater at the MGM Grand. As a seafood fan, it was three courses of heaven. Not only did our group enjoy a leisurely dinner and a beautiful atmosphere, we took off to the Motor Bar at the Westin Book Cadillac for drinks and conversation afterward. Still one of the most memorable nights of the season.
I’m looking forward to a DRW redux tonight in fact. Our oversized group had a bit of a challenge garnering a table so we’ll be dining a little later than usual. But just look at this menu at 24Grille. Can you say Crab Cakes with jalapeno emulsion? So many choices, I can’t wait to see what everyone orders. That Italian Tarfuto is calling my name.
You can’t take the girl too far from her roots, you see.
Have you participated in Detroit Restaurant Week? Why or why not. Tell us where you went and what the experience was like. Would you go back to the restaurant you tried?
