If you’ve only ever seen a movie at a multiplex you’re really missing a key part of the experience. Case-in-point – there is something really magical about a historic movie house. I maintain one of the most magical in Detroit is our own Detroit Film Theatre.
Yes, I know it’s really a film auditorium, a film wing of the Detroit Institute of Arts. But it’s just as lavish as any historic movie house I know. From the balcony to the front row, this is how movies are meant to be seen.
And this weekend, the DFT pays tribute to Hollywood’s silent past in serious grandeur. Boston’s Alloy Orchestra returns – as they do about once a year – to perform the score to a four different film gems. If you’ve never watched a classic and heard the score performed live in the theatre, it’s a stirring experience.
Music and movies come together to create the emotional heart of the picture. For a fan of any genre, this is certainly something to see and experience.
Man with a Movie Camera, by Dziga Vertov (1929): Showing at 9:30 p.m. Friday Sept. 24 this experimental feature shows a day in the life of a great city.
The Complete Metropolis, by Fritz Lang (1927): Showing 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 this fully restored classic is known for its eye-popping sets and monstrous effects.
Masters of Slapstick, Showing 3 p.m Sunday, Sept. 26 this collection of short films by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton will entertain all ages.
Blackmail, by Alfred Hitchcock (1929) Showing 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, shot simultaneously with the talking picture, this film tells a suspenseful tale of a young British woman and her detective boyfriend.
Tickets are $10 or $8 for DIA members. Children may enter for $5 for The Masters of Slapstick.
