This week’s #MusicMondays (#MusicWednesdays) sees new efforts from a Harlemite who is making great music despite her ongoing court battles with an estranged husband, the emcee behind one of last year’s best rap albums of the year, and a battle of the sexes. For more, look below.
Mos Def “The Tournament”

As if Mos Def’s The Ecstatic album from last year wasn’t perfect enough, a song from the album’s cutting room floor leaked recently. And it’s just as good as the rest of the disc. Dense and emotive, Mos rhymes and sings his way to another incredible song.

Kelis “They Say” (feat. Kid Cudi)

Regardless of the messy divorce and child support issues with her ex-husband Nas, Kelis is still making music that intrigues and entertains. Kelis insists “They say I’m changing because they’re doing the same thing” on the song’s chorus, but with a sound that’s even more techno-heavy than her previous records with The Neptunes, she’s modest about her own diversity. The eccentric Harlem vocalist has always been in her own lane, so this is a pleasant return to form. A rave-ready soundbed of synths and handclaps backs vocals from her and Kid Cudi, making this a song that’s sure to catch speed overseas while reaching niche audiences in the states.

Ludacris “My Chick Is Bad” (feat. Nicki Minaj)

Ludacris’ upcoming album, Battle of the Sexes, sees him squaring up against the industry’s elite female emcees to speak on different relationship issues. The first leak, “My Chick Is Bad,” sees Luda listing his wifey’s skill set – great looks, ably working a stripper pole, and handling her liquor, along with more – while Nicki Minaj confidently ends the song with her charismatic self boasts and her Lil Wayne-tinged flow. The bass-heavy beat bangs, and with Luda’s and Nicki’s authorative voices, this should be ubiquitous in clubs and cars everywhere.
