We're pretty much purists when it comes to Packo's--we always head for the original Front Street location. I shy away from a lot of sit-down meals near a sports venue just for the reasons you mention.
You're right about going to see the Mud Hens...that's always a fun experience!

Tresa-I've always been too stuffed for dessert, although they look tempting. I keep threatening to have the chili "sundae", too! I love those little pickle key chains they have in the gift store...I'm lucky to make it out of there with just a jar or two of product

Andrew-Packo's really is a fun place to eat, isn't it? It's been years since I've been down to the Toledo Zoo--our last couple of trips were out to Maumee for a lighthouse festival at the state park there and to the Old West End to take photos of the beautiful Victorian houses there (fodder for a couple of posts on my own Midwest travel blog at www.midwestguest.com
We really got a kick out of the folks in Wisconsin who couldn't get over the fact that the Mud Hens and Packo's really -did- exist. They were so excited to see a Mud Hens T-shirt in the Keweenaw! I can only imagine how excited they might have been had I been wearing Tresa's dancing pickle hat!!

If you are going to stop in at Packo's ~ don't stop with the Fried Pickle. Indulge a little that day ... Apple Dumpling or Cherry Strudle. I moved away from Toledo 20+ years ago after my 4 yr gig at UofT and every time I travel back I have to get my Packo's fix. The gift shop at Packo's at the Park yields interesting finds ~ my dog now sports a bandana that states "where man bites dog" and my dancing pickle hat generally gets a comment or two at a weekend bbq.
