Theatre in Metro Detroit

Looking for a great way to spend your summer evenings? Metro Detroit offers rich cultural experiences in several realms, especially in the world of the theatre. Several different shows are currently running or have just recently opened, and here is a taste of what the area has to offer.

Tipping Point Theatre, in Northville, Michigan is currently featuring The Kings of Unionville, written by the theatre’s own artistic director James R. Kuhl. The play centers on a modern day society of kings looking for a new member to maintain their weekly euchre game, and running amuck through the struggles that plague father and son relationships, as well as those between different generations. Encore Michigan says that The Kings of Unionville “draws a full house,” and that “this has been a very good season for works locally.” The Kings of Unionville runs from July 24 through August 24th.

The Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea, Michigan is showing The Last Romance by Joe DiPietro, a comedy about a widower name Ralph who takes a new route with his dog through the park and stumbles upon a second chance at love. “[It’s] a heartwarming comedy about the transformative power of love,” states the theatre’s website. This earnest romance even takes place in a dog park with live dogs to increase the tugging of your heartstrings. The shows director, Michelle Mountain, states “it’s a gentle little romance that will leave people feeling happy.” The Last Romance runs June 12th through August 30th.
